We look at a lot, and longtime readers will know I really mean a LOT, of examples of organizations doing apologies the wrong way. Addressing the wrong audience, failing to cover stakeholder's concerns, and the ever-dreadful non-apology apology are all common mistakes, but even when the content is almost right there are a few things almost nobody does the way they should.

Well, how about a look at a company that knocked its apology out of the park?

As you're probably aware, Anthem BlueCross was hit by a major hack which exposed the private information of as many as 80 million customers. As expected, the reaction was not pretty. But, by putting out a proper response, which we share in full in our post Anthem's Apology Hits all Three C's of Credibility, the company bought some much-needed understanding from its stakeholders and took a big step toward rebuilding the trust it lost. One of our first steps when writing an apology is to put ourselves in the shoes of the audience and think, "What would I want to hear?", and Anthem clearly did the same.

No matter who you're communicating with - a loved one, a single customer, or an audience of thousands - confidence, competence, and compassion are the keys to opening minds and reaching hearts

I enjoyed my recent participation in the University of Oregon's "Guest Executive" program so much that I would love to do more of the same at other schools that aren't TOO far a trip from my Los Angeles-area base. Over a two-day period, UO had me guest lecture/teach at four PR-related classes and make an "open to the public" speech. They covered all travel costs and a modest honorarium.
