Just A Thought...
"Don't play ostrich -- remember what part of you is still sticking out of the sand!"
— Jonathan Bernstein, BCM founder & chairman
From the Editor
27 Years of Bernstein Crisis Management and New Free Resources!
This article's quote is actually the very first "Just A Thought...", published by our own Jonathan Bernstein in the premiere edition of Crisis Manager on February 1, 2000, a year that saw the Concorde crash, the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen, civil unrest in the U.S. connected to Vermont's legalization of same-sex unions, and a troubled economy in the EU, with the UK fuel protests fanning the flames. There was mad cow disease, California suffered rolling blackouts, and natural disasters rocked locations around the world, from Indonesia to Azerbaijan. We even had a contested election featuring the Bush v. Gore recount (which I would have called a debacle before the staggering and embarrassing events that have occurred in connection to our latest presidential race, by which it pales in comparison).
My point in all of this? This "worst of" from 21 years ago sounds an awful lot like events we've faced over the past year. Yes, some things have taken a more prominent role (COVID, hello), but the categories of events that can create crisis situations continue to repeat themselves, and that means you can be prepared to stop them before they hit.
My father founded this company with the idea that you simply can not hide your head in the sand and pretend problems are going to go away, that when you choose to play ostrich you accept full well the rest of you presents a big juicy target for trouble to attack. Now, 27 successful years and hundreds of clients later, that idea continues as a guiding principle for Bernstein Crisis Management and the clients we serve.
We're thankful to everyone who's enabled us to do what we do for almost three decades, and we promise we'll be here for you when the hard times hit for many years to come. Of course I'd be remiss if I didn't also give a personal thanks to my dad, my mentor, and the man who thankfully only had to put the "boss" boot on for a verbal butt-kicking a few times during my apprentice years, Jonathan Bernstein. I didn't always know I'd wind up working in crisis management, but in retrospect it probably should have been obvious. Let's keep it goin' 😉.
