Reputations are forged in crisis
Greek thinkers keep making their way into Crisis Management Quotables. To me the appeal is not so much their statements are spectacularly profound, but rather that they perfectly summarize a piece of the human experience. Take today’s quote, from philosopher and founder of the deliciously indulgent Epicurean school of thought, Epicurus himself:
“Skillful pilots gain their reputation from storms and tempest.” — Epicurus
Sink or swim, baby. When it comes time to handle a crisis situation it doesn’t matter what your intentions were, it matters what you get done. Your reputation quite literally hangs in the balance.
The lesson? Be prepared. A tempest will hit you or your organization at some point, and being ready to handle it will render you much more likely to come out with your reputation intact.
