Success brings dangers of its own
English playwright, poet, and literary critic Ben Jonson was considered second only to Shakespeare for his contributions to the stage in the late 1500’s and early 1600’s. He was also a cunning humorist, and, as so many others who are talented in the comedy department, had a keen insight into human nature that went well beyond knowing how to elicit a laugh.
“Success produces confidence; confidence relaxes industry, and negligence ruins the reputation which accuracy had raised.” — Ben Jonson
Despite Jonson’s statement some 400 years ago, the series of events he describes is still a problem for many in the modern era. It’s in our DNA to relax when things are going well. However, the moment you do that you open the door for problems to creep in. Enjoy your success, but never sit complacent. Mind the knowledge Jonson shared and always keep your eyes open for potential crises, ways to improve, and methods to keep you on top.
Ignore that advice, and you’ll wake up one morning to see you’re no longer leading the pack.
