Always have a goal before you start communicating

Anyone who leads a religious congregation can tell you a thing or two about communication, and Quill and Pen Crisis Management Quotables - smallthis week’s Crisis Management Quotable comes to us not from a run-of-the-mill clergyman, but the first Bishop of Texas, Alexander Gregg. Assisting his state and its people in their evolution from the wild West to settled communities, there’s no doubt Gregg was effective at getting his message across.

“If you don’t know what you want to achieve in your presentation your audience never will.” — Alexander Gregg

Now Gregg never saw a computer, cell phone, TV, heck, the radio wasn’t even invented until years after his passing, yet this advice remains as sound as it was the day it was delivered. No matter the medium you use, your communications must always, always have a goal behind them. Without one you’ll be left ineffective, floundering, and, before too long, wondering why your audience went away.
