Talk is cheap, reputation is priceless
Mencius was a fourth-century philosopher who studied and fought to preserve the teachings of Confucious against competing schools of thought. Of course, this meant he spent a LOT of time thinking about human nature, which likely led to him produce this week’s Crisis Management Quotable:
Kindly words do not enter so deeply into men as a reputation for kindness. — Mencius
Even thousands of years ago, Mencius realized that reputation is built more from action than words. Of course saying wonderful things will make people happy for the moment, but really carving out a solid reputation means getting out there and showing what you’re made of.
Whether it’s helping with charitable causes, reaching out directly to stakeholders with info they can use, or any number of other ways, you have to figure out a way to demonstrate you really are what you claim to be.
