Handled well, crises can leave you stronger in the end
Norman Cousins was an American political journalist and world peace advocate whose empathetic views on the human condition I greatly admire. This same empathetic viewpoint is priceless in crisis management, as you can see from the quote below:
“Man is not imprisoned by habit. Great changes in him can be wrought by crisis–once that crisis can be recognized and understood.” — Norman Cousins
Although the ideal is to recognize organizational issues before crises cause long-lasting damage, the unfortunate reality is that it often takes a bad situation to instigate change. When you run into crisis, take a step back and really look at how it was started – not just the actual events but the steps leading up to them, as well as any points of failure throughout the process. Done correctly, and with a careful touch, you can come out of the crisis stronger than before.
