Smart sensors help prevent foodborne illness crises and loss
We’ve discussed the crisis management risks that accompany the “Internet of Things”, or linking of just about every device to the ‘net. Despite those dangers, the IoT also brings opportunities to prevent and spot risks before they become major problems. In the wake of the Chipotle outbreak crisis, food purveyors like Chik-fil-A and Ben and Jerry’s are beginning to install internet-connected sensors and wireless gateways to track the temperature of walk-in refrigerators and freezers. By notifying management via text and email alerts if temperatures fall below a certain threshold, even overnight, these sensors are capable of saving organizations money directly through preventing loss of product. And, of course, they also help prevent the larger issue of in-store contamination due to storage at improper temperatures. Sensors of this type can even help mid-crisis, as logs can help prove that food safety protocol was followed at the affected location, directing investigators and the public to the real culprit.
The Internet of Things is truly a double-edged sword. There’s no question that it will create crises. But, employed properly, it can help prevent a great number of negative situations as well. As this technology becomes more and more a part of everyday life we’re bound to see both sides.
